2013: Supreme Court of India wants a practical way to implement intergenerational equity in iron ore mining in Goa

2014: Goa Foundation develops a proposal that covers the mineral value, the environment and the opportunity to earn income from the extraction activity.

2014: Supreme Court of India orders, on grounds of intergenerational equity, a cap on extraction as well as the creation of a Goa Iron Ore Permanent Fund financed by a new levy on iron ore.

2015: The Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), in partnership with Goa Foundation and Inclusive Media for Change, organized the first seminar titled “Permanent Fund Model for Ethical Mining: Land, Livelihoods and Intergenerational Equity

2015: Goenchi Mati Movement began to promote the implementation of the 5 principles of fair mining in Goa

2016: Goa Foundation begins advocacy on changing international standards for government accounting & statistics.

2017: Elections for Goa’s state legislative assembly held. Three competing parties supported the Goenchi Mati Manifesto. One of them, the Goa Forward Party, won 3 constituencies. But they promptly changed their tune.

2017: Supreme Court of India discussed intergenerational equity and orders the review of India’s National Mineral Policy 2008. All-India coalition formed to incorporate intergenerational equity into the final policy.

2019: Presented the shared inheritance approach at the General Assembly of Publish What You Pay. The General Assembly supported our approach in its communique.

2019: The International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (IPSASB) puts a new standard on Natural Resources as the highest priority in its Work Plan 2019-23. Earlier in 2018, we had organised a campaign to advocate for this new standard.

2019: Key suggestions incorporated in India’s National Mineral Policy 2019. Many subsequent steps needed. Advocacy continues for implementation of the policy.

2020: New campaign started to on deep sea mining (DSM) in the area beyond national jurisdiction (the Area). Minerals in the Area are the Common Heritage of (Hu)mankind. A sign-on demand letter / petition was created asking for the implementation of intergenerational equity in deep sea mining.

2020: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) consulted on its resolution on Mineral Resource Governance. In response, Goa Foundation sent in a detailed representation on mineral resource governance could be improved.

2020: A new alliance formed in India, Mineral Inheritors’ Rights Association (MIRA), that sees natural resources as a shared inheritance.
